Waco, TX ( FOX 44 ) — Members of the community showed up at an Animal Welfare Broad meeting with concerns about the dogs at risk of possibly being euthanized now that the city is taking over.

One community member, Ian Camacho is a member of what he calls the ‘Waco Animal Group’. They’re new and they’re goal is to make sure the Animal Welfare Board takes this seriously.

“The three main things we work on our education, economics, and try to make sure that the financial aspects are covered for the shelter as well as people and enforceability,” says Waco Animal Group member, Ian Camacho.

So, what to do with the more than 200 dogs in the shelter and the 600 in foster care?

Tom Lupfer say the city wants to get the shelter at 80% capacity. Which is a great goal and healthy for the animals, but where the concerns arises is how are they going to get to that 80% capacity.

Even without the building Lupfer says they will continue to expand their services by finding dogs a home and to collaborate with the city as much as possible. They have big plans in the works that will include working along side the city… in a new capacity.

“We intend to be vigilant as well as Animal Welfare Board mentioned, be vigilant about the outcomes here and watch carefully how the city manages this process,” says Humane Society interim executive director, Tom Lupfer.

The Humane Society is reaching out to the community looking for fosters, volunteers, and shelters outside of Texas.

“We’ll continue to operate food pantries for pets and we’ll continue to operate large scale adoption events. As well as large scale chip and vaccination events, whether it’s in partnership with the city or whether we do it on our own,” says Lupfer.

The Humane Society says they encourage the community to join them in advocating and to actively support the shelter in enhancing its lifesaving impact and continuing the no-kill mission.
