AUSTIN (KXAN) — Texas Gov. Greg Abbott activated emergency response teams Sunday ahead of potential tropical activity in the Gulf of Mexico.

A storm system moving through the Gulf of Mexico has a 90% chance of tropical development, according to the National Weather Service. Although the impacts for Central Texas remain unclear, forecasts predict heavy rainfall, damaging winds and flash flooding along the Texas coast.

Abbott also directed the Texas Division of Emergency Management to increase its readiness level at the division’s State Operations Center, the release said. These resources are in addition to those already deployed, which include the Texas Department of Public Safety, the state’s National Guard and the Public Utility Commission of Texas.

Texans are urged to take the necessary precautions to ensure safety during the potential tropical weather, such as monitoring road conditions and having an emergency plan in place.
