WACO, Texas ( FOX 44 ) — Before the sun rose over Waco, Baylor University’s Army ROTC program honored the lives lost in the September 11, 2001, attacks with their annual memorial event.

In the early hours of the morning, ROTC cadets and participants gathered to run 2,071 steps, a tribute to the heroic efforts of first responders who ascended the Twin Towers to save lives. This symbolic gesture underscores the profound sacrifice made on that fateful day.

“It’s always a good reminder to put yourself in their shoes and just really humble yourself,” said Cadet Andrew Kleckner. “It’s a huge blessing to be able to remember their sacrifice and honor the lives of those who died that day.”

This year’s event saw 300 attendees, reflecting the continued dedication to remembering 9/11.

Event planner Megan McKenna praised the turnout.

“It’s amazing to see it grow. I’ve always felt very passionate about 9/11, and so it’s really amazing to see this many people turn out,” McKenna said.

For William Norman, a member of the ROTC program born after the attacks, the day’s significance remains profound.

“I think it’s really important that people remember and recognize the significance of this, because lives were lost, and lives have been continually affected by this event,” he noted.

Ainslie Stewart, whose family was directly affected by the events of 9/11, shared her personal connection.

“As an ROTC program, it’s really important for us to continue to remember why we’re serving and why we’re here. I have family members who were part of the 9/11 event, and every day I just remember the people who have passed and those still facing complications from it,” Stewart added.

Attendees left the stadium with a sense of pride and reverence. “Bear strong,” was the message from the ROTC, as participants left it all on the field in remembrance of 9/11.

The event was further distinguished by the presence of Marine and Navy veterans, along with students’ family members, who came to show their support.

In honoring the sacrifices made on September 11, 2001, the Baylor ROTC reaffirmed its commitment to remembering and respecting the legacy of those affected by the tragic events.
