SAN ANGELO, Texas ( Concho Valley Homepage ) — Several San Angelo schools can expect an increased law enforcement presence on Sept. 12 due to rumors circulating online about a threat to Central High School. Here’s what the San Angelo Police Department chief said about it.

The SAPD reported via social media at 9:14 p.m. on Sept. 11 that it was “aware of a potential rumor toward Central High School tomorrow.” It stated that it was “actively investigating the situation and taking all necessary precautions to ensure the safety of students and staff” as well.

SAPD Chief Travis Griffith then addressed the public in a video posted to social media at 11:45 p.m. that same day. In it, he clarified what the rumor was about and said that it was false.

“One of the statements that were made was about someone that was tackled at Central (High School) that was maybe trying to do an active shooter type situation and arrested with a gun,” Griffith said. “Those are not true. That did not happen.”

Despite stating that the rumor was false, Griffith said that the police department and possibly other law enforcement agencies would send extra officers to multiple schools in San Angelo on Sept. 12 to assuage public concerns.

“For peace of mind and nothing more, we’re going to be putting extra staff into the schools tomorrow,” Griffith said. “So at various times at various schools, you’ll see additional police officers, possibly state and county, just popping in, checking in to really ease your mind.”

Griffith asked anyone with information regarding the incident to contact the SAPD.
