Texas Workforce Commission gives $83 million to adult education programs

AUSTIN, Texas ( KETK ) – The Texas Workforce Commission has awarded $83,030,502 in grants to 40 adult education and literacy programs across the state.

The $83,030,502 in grants are being funded by the U.S. Department of Education’s Office of Career, Technical and Adult Education to support 70,000 adults in the TWC’s Adult Education and Literacy (AEL) programs.

“Each year more than 70,000 Texans enroll in adult education programs to help increase their earning potential in the Texas workforce,” said TWC Chairman Bryan Daniel. “These AEL programs are helping adult learners gain the skills they need for success.”

East Texas’ Angelina College will receive $1,008,819, the Literacy Council of Tyler will get $2,258,549, Navarro College will get $992,547 and Texarkana College will receive $301,400.

“Adult education and literacy help to build career pathways and improve skills for Texans to create life-changing opportunities,” said TWC commissioner representing labor Alberto Treviño III. “These grants highlight how TWC is empowering Texans to accomplish their educational goals and seek a career in our growing economy.”

AEL programs supported by these grants include high school equivalency preparation, integrated English literacy, civics education and other programs dedicated to improving English proficiency, earning high school equivalency, gaining industry-recognized credentials and digital literacy.

All of TWC’s AEL programs across the state are provided for free to adult learners who don’t have functional literacy, a high school diploma, or are learning English.
