SAPD: 1 arrested in standoff following Saturday stabbing

SAN ANGELO, Texas ( Concho Valley Homepage ) — A man has been apprehended by law enforcement following a standoff at a residence on Howard Street after he stabbed another individual multiple times during the evening of Sept. 14.

During a press conference held at 9:30 p.m., San Angelo Police Department Chief Travis Griffith stated that officers were dispatched to the 1200 block of Howard Street at 4:47 p.m. in reference to a stabbing. Upon their arrival, the officers found a 34-year-old male who had sustained multiple stab wounds.

The San Angelo Fire Department responded to the scene as well and transported the injured male to an area hospital. Griffith stated that the last update he received regarding the victim was that he was treated and is “actually going to be getting released.”

The SAPD’s Criminal Investigations Division and Crime Scene Investigations Unit were activated as well as a SWAT team and a crisis negotiation team.

Through an investigation, law enforcement was able to identify the suspect as 48-year-old Ricardo Rico. According to a press release issued by the police department, Rico barricaded himself in a small shed and “refused to comply with officers’ commands to surrender.”

A warrant was obtained for his arrest, and the SWAT team, with the assistance of a drone team and K-9 unit, was able to take him into custody without further incident after a “limited amount of chemical munitions” was used.

Rico was booked into the Tom Green County Detention Center at 9:55 p.m. with one charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. He has a posted bond of $50,000.
