( WJET/WFXP ) — 2.9 million passengers make their way through airports across the United States every day, roughly one billion passengers per year. J.D. Power has released its 2024 airport satisfaction survey showing how airports rank against each other.

The Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport, John Wayne Airport, Orange County (California), and the Indianapolis International Airport all placed as the top airports in their respective categories.

J.D. Power says that despite all the traffic and rising airfare prices, this has not prevented passengers from enjoying their time at airports.

“Huge air travel demand has not slowed down in North America, despite the steadily rising costs of flights, ground travel, hotel rooms and pretty much anything you can buy in an airport,” said Michael Taylor, managing director of travel, hospitality and retail at J.D. Power. “Most travelers are still enjoying the experience. However, we are starting to see a breaking point in consumer spending, with average spend per person in the terminal declining significantly from a year ago.”

The key findings in this year’s study showed that airports have handled record passenger volumes, with 59% of North American passengers saying that their airport helped to alleviate the stress of travel. The study also revealed that passengers have spent, on average, $3.53 less on food and drinks than they did last year. More airports are adapting and creating a unique and local identity that aims to celebrate the region with décor, signage, stores and restaurants.

The study asked 26,290 passengers who traveled through at least one U.S. or Canadian airport 30 days prior to taking the survey. However, this year cannot be directly compared to past years since the study was redesigned for 2024.

This study measures overall satisfaction with mega airports (33M + passengers per year), large Airports (10M-32.9M passengers per year), and medium airports (4.5M to 9.9M passengers per year). It measured the experience across seven different dimensions which include: ease of travel through [the] airport; level of trust with the airport; terminal facilities; airport staff; departure/to airport experience; food, beverage, and retail; and arrival/from airport experience.

Below is an abbreviated list of the top airports for each category, each based on a 1,000 point scale. To view a full list, click here .
