SAN ANGELO, Texas ( Concho Valley Homepage ) — Fields of Faith is coming to town again, drawing hundreds of children and volunteers across the Concho Valley to San Angelo Stadium for a night of religious expression. Here’s what you need to know about this year’s event.

A Night 20 Years in the Making

According to the Fields of Faith website , “Fields of Faith is an FCA-certified ministry program where athletes gather at sport environments in their communities to challenge their peers to read the Bible daily and grow in their relationship with Jesus Christ and His church.” The event was first held in 2004 on school athletic fields in Texas, Oklahoma and Kansas after Oklahoma Fellowship of Christian Athletes Area Director Jeff Martin prayed in 2002 “about what to do with his heartfelt frustration regarding the temptations and spiritual battles facing the ‘spectator generation’ youth.”

“The end goal is to just present Jesus Christ to as many people as possible,” Concho Valley area FCA representative Brett Lang said.

Since then, the event has grown and influenced the lives of thousands of people in the United States, including the people of the Concho Valley. Lang stated that approximately 80 churches and schools attend San Angelo’s Fields of Faith each year, though exact numbers fluctuate from event to event.

“I can say last year around 4,000 people, students, adults, attended Fields of Faith, ” Lang said.

What’s Happening for Fields of Faith 2024?

This year, Fields of Faith will be held in San Angelo Stadium on Wednesday, Oct. 2. Lang said that the gates will open at 6:30 p.m. or 7:30 p.m. depending on whether the band playing that night is ready yet.

Lang stated that the event’s master of ceremonies will be Kevin Huddleston, who has MC’ed San Angelo’s Fields of Faith event since it arrived in the town in 2010. Three Angelo State University softball team members will also speak at the event, with one member praying and the other two reading aloud from the Bible. A band from the Weatherford-Wichita Falls area will perform worship music for attendees.

Two seniors from Miles High School in Miles, Texas, will give personal accounts of their faith during the event: Ethan James, 17, and Austin McFarland, 17.

“I’m just going to show how God has worked in my life and just how it is so much better walking with Christ than walking away from Christ,” McFarland said.

Both James and McFarland expressed excitement regarding their involvement in the event.

“I’m really confident,” James said. “I’m really praying that God’s going to do something only he can do and work in the lives of the students at Fields of Faith.”

The night’s speaker will be Zack Randles, pastor of Waterfront Church in Washington, D.C. Following his message, students will be invited down from the stands onto the field to be ministered to by volunteers from the community who have been approved by the FCA through a vetting process.

“They’re sitting down with one to 10 or 12 or 15 kids and just talking those kids through the decision they just made to follow Christ,” Lang said.

With Fields of Faith 2024 just days away, Lang is confident in what the night will hold for those who attend the event.

“It’s going to be a great night with Jesus being proclaimed, the worship music is going to be fantastic and the kids are going to be really involved,” Lang said. “It’s a life-changing night for a lot of kids.”
