Waco, TX ( FOX 44 ) — What was once known as The Humane Society of Central Texas is now known as Pet Circle. The City of Waco finally breaks their silence and addresses updates in an Animal Welfare Broad Meeting.

After a surprise inspection, the State Department of Health Services says the shelter is quote “the most cleanest and well run” facilities they have ever visited.

“We did close down on that Monday and Tuesday for a deep clean and the reset of the facility. We did some staff cross-training and things like that. Then after those two days, when we were closed, we were right back open to the public,” says Chief of Staff for City Manager’s Office, Ashley Nystorm.

One of their goals at Pet Circle is committed to be a no kill shelter and eliminate the need to euthanize healthy adoptable animals.

“Our euthanasia this month were a little lower than last month, so we are still no kill. What no kill is, is it just means that we have a 90% or higher live exit rate,” says Nystorm.

Ken Willits, who’s been volunteering for four years and when he needs a pick me up he can always rely on the dogs.

“The bottom line is the dogs are suffering. The dogs don’t get the love. We only get back here as a volunteer to get back at the shelter so the dogs can be socialized and they’ll have a better chance of getting adopted,” says Waco resident, Willits.

Pet Circle continues to work to fill open positions and gearing up to welcome back volunteers soon.

“We will have a volunteer program. We’ve been doing the background checks, our volunteer interest form is on our website,” says Nystorm.

Pet Circle and The City of Waco continue to figure out the best ways to care for the dogs.
