SAN ANGELO, Texas ( Concho Valley Homepage ) —A San Angelo World War II veteran with a very interesting life story will be celebrating his 100th birthday in November.

His parents operated a traveling circus in the 1920s, and he attended hundreds of schools during his childhood, eventually graduating in Junction. The South Texas native worked as a radio operator during World War II after being drafted into the United States Army.

“Some people, including myself, at first, thought, ‘Well, boy, I’m in the Signal Corps, they won’t touch me,” Broyles said. “Well, they did. They were firing on the beach.”

After leaving the U.S. military at the end of World War II, Broyles worked as a pilot and retired in San Angelo. Broyles now lives at the Christian Village senior apartment complex.
