WACO, Texas ( FOX 44 ) — A vibrant mural honoring Hispanic heritage has recently caught the attention of residents driving along North Valley Mills Drive, adding a splash of color and culture to the city’s landscape.
Local artist Tony Bryant is behind this captivating artwork, which adorns the exterior of Mexicano Grill #9.
Bryant expressed his joy in creating a piece that resonates with the community, “It makes me feel good because I’m doing it for people that appreciate me.”
The restaurant’s owner, Orlando Laon, welcomed Bryant’s vision to celebrate Hispanic culture.
“Feels very nice. I love the work that this guy is doing. We do this for us, We trying to bring some Mexico to Waco,” Orlando said.
Diners have been praising the mural’s beauty, with one Waco resident, Linda, stating, “It’s the most beautiful thing I’ve seen. It has topped all the paintings that I have seen of her,” referring to the portrait of Frida Kahlo.
Bryant, whose work is inspired by the iconic Mexican painter Frida Kahlo and Mexican culture, aims to evoke a sense of comfort and joy through his art. As he adds the finishing touches, he hopes viewers can envision themselves as part of the mural’s story.
“If you ever want to be able to express the beauty inside of yourself, hang around people that appreciate you, and appreciate those people. They’ll give you all the energy, all the inspiration, the love, the joy, Everything you need,” he advised.
Originally from Atlanta, Georgia, Bryant’s artistic journey began in childhood when he painted for his aunt. He attended art school during a time when few African Americans were represented, honing his skills and finding his unique voice.
After relocating to Waco, his first mural in town was for Poppa Rollo’s Pizza, and before Waco, he completed numerous projects across Texas.
Creating murals can be a time-consuming process; Bryant notes that an 8-foot by 12-foot piece can take him between seven to ten days to complete. His meticulous attention to detail stems from his education in art, where he mastered the intricacies of color, texture, and depth.
“I get most of my inspiration just by watching the reaction to my work,” Bryant said, adding that the joy he brings to others fuels his passion. His murals can even be found in smaller towns like Marlin, Texas, as well as prestigious projects honoring figures like Muhammad Ali and Thurgood Marshall.
As Waco continues to embrace its artistic community, Bryant remains dedicated to enhancing the city’s beauty one mural at a time.
