Lake View High School creates 17-foot mum ahead of Homecoming

SAN ANGELO, Texas ( Concho Valley Homepage ) — The floral design class at Lake View High School excelled in true school spirit, crafting a Texas-sized mum in over six weeks in collaboration with various student organizations and classes.

Floral design teacher Jennifer Urbanek expressed the importance of teamwork in the project.

“We had to collaborate with our woodshop and welding classes to create a backing for the mum, which allows it to be displayed on the wall,” Urbanek explained.

The mum features the Lakeview school color palette of blue, black and white.

Junior advanced floral design student Jordan Beji not only helped lead the efforts in the production of the Texas-sized mum but also extended collaborations outside the floral design class, reaching out to various organizations, including soccer, cheerleading and the school library.

“We worked on various sizes of ribbons and constructed the mum’s head by gluing tissue paper in the center,” Beji said. “One of our biggest challenges was managing the spacing, given the mum’s large size, and ensuring we had a sturdy backing to support the weight of all the ribbons.”

When asked about the legacy of the mum, Urbanek expressed that although the mum would be stationary until after Homecoming, she hoped that the mum would remain a cherished decoration through Homecoming and beyond.

“Hopefully we can store it and use it for years to come, and if not, we will do it again next year,” Urbanek said. “It’s been a labor of love for sure. It took about six weeks to make, and we hope that everybody really enjoys it as much as we have.”
