WACO, Texas ( FOX 44 ) — Music is an avenue that brings communities together, uniting generations through a simple melody.

La Ley 104.1, a local Waco radio station, took to the airwaves in 2005, bringing a taste of home for the Spanish-speaking community through music.

“We are loved by by our pretty much all the Hispanics in central Texas because we play their music them, especially the ones that are from Mexico,” La Ley General Sales Manager Hector Sabido said.

La Ley Program Director Jaime Martinez joined La Ley in the beginning, helping to create a segment every Monday through Friday called “Las Classicas de La Ley,” allowing many Hispanics across Central Texas to reminisce with the songs they grew up with.

“My grandmother would listen to radio stations on the A.M. all the way in Mexico, because there were no local radio stations here,” Martinez said. “It brings back memories and we get to relive those.”

However, La Ley 104.1 didn’t stop at only music. As the radio station developed, La Ley sought to provide resources for the Hispanic Community, ranging from community events to giving listeners a safe space to listen and talk about local issues.

“[We’re] still facing some of the racism, talking about those issues,” Martinez said. “We continue to speak about it. We continue to give a voice to the Hispanic community.”

“We definitely have been a foundation and source of help for Spanish speaking community here in McLennan County,” Sabido said. “Knowing full well that maybe all of our listeners are not here legally but it still gives an opportunity to be able to be informed and ask questions without being penalized for it.”

Whether you’re tuning in for information or la musica, La Ley continues to have you covered entering Hispanic Heritage month as it uses Latin music as a way to unite different backgrounds in the Central Texas region.

“I don’t care what type of heritage you have background, music brings people together,” Sabido said. “I think that’s what we have done is brought people together and really have been able to just give an experience that will bless them for years to come.”
