WACO, Texas ( FOX 44 ) — If you’ve recently driven down North Valley Mills Drive, you may have noticed a stunning mural honoring Hispanic heritage painted by local artist Tony Bryant.

Bryant is dedicated to showcasing Hispanic culture through his vibrant artwork at Mexicano Grill, a project that has drawn admiration from the community.

“It makes me feel good because I’m doing it for people that appreciate me,” Bryant said. “I’m working with people that are appreciating me.”

Orlando Laon, the owner of Mexicano Grill, explained how the collaboration came to life, “Tony approached me with this idea, and it’s been incredible to see it come together.”

Patrons of the restaurant have praised the mural’s execution of Frida Kahlo, with Waco resident Linda stating, “It’s the most beautiful thing I’ve seen. It has topped all the paintings I have seen of her.”

The mural draws inspiration from iconic Mexican painter Frida Kahlo, known for her self-portraits that explore identity and the human experience through vivid colors.

As Bryant adds the finishing touches, he hopes viewers will feel a sense of connection and joy, envisioning themselves within Kahlo’s world.

“If you ever want to express the beauty inside of yourself, surround yourself with people who appreciate you,” Bryant said. “They give you all the energy, inspiration, love, and joy you need.”

Bryant’s journey as an artist began in childhood when his aunt encouraged him to paint around the house. What started as a hobby eventually evolved into a career. He pursued art education in Atlanta during a time when few African Americans were accepted into art schools.

His work has since graced walls across Texas, with his first murals in Waco creating a lasting impact.

“Each time I painted something, someone would see it, and this is the result of that,” he explained, referring to the mural.

Through this mural, Bryant aims to emphasize the importance of recognizing and celebrating diverse cultures. With roots in Georgia and a flourishing career in Texas, he is proud to contribute to the artistic landscape of Waco, acknowledging and respecting all cultures.
