Resignation letter ends court case against former Callaway County sheriff

FULTON, Mo. (KMIZ)

A court case was dismissed Monday after former Callaway County Sheriff Clay Chism submitted a formal letter of resignation.

Chism was brought to court in Callaway County in June to determine if he should have been removed from office after his peace officer’s license was revoked . His license was permanently revoked in March. Missouri law requires sheriffs to have a valid peace officer's license.

He continued to receive pay and benefits from the county until his salary was suspended in February and his insurance benefits ended on March 31 .

Chism submitted his letter of resignation on Thursday and Callaway County Prosecutor Bejamin Miller then filed a motion to dismiss the case the same day. The court accepted the dismissal on Monday.

The Missouri Department of Public Safety revoked Chism's peace officer's license after Chism was drunk both on and off the clock. Chism pleaded guilty to misdemeanor DWI in one of those instances from a 2022 Randolph County case .

Callaway County officials confronted Chism at least two times in 2023 when they noticed he was intoxicated at work. Judge Brouck Jacobs removed Chism from office in June after county officials confronted Chism about buying and drinking liquor on the job that month. The state suspended his peace officer’s license on June 9.
