Harry S. Truman Memorial Veterans’ Hospital houses over 100 veterans in FY 2024

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

The Harry S. Truman Memorial Veterans' Hospital has housed over 100 veterans experiencing homelessness during fiscal 2024, the hospital said Thursday.

On Thursday, the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs announced out of the 114 homeless veterans in the area, fewer than 3% became homeless again.

According to the Boone County Coalition to End Homelessness , as of Sept. 18, there were 50 homeless veterans in the county. In October 2023, this number sat at 34, according to the coalition.

The U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs says in FY 2024, over 43,000 veterans experiencing homelessness were housed across the country. The department says fewer than 4% of these veterans have become homeless again.

“No person who has served this country should ever have to experience homelessness,” VA Secretary Denis McDonough says in the release. “As a result of this year’s efforts, more than 43,000 formerly homeless veterans now have access to the homes that they deserve."

The department says veteran homelessness in the U.S. has dropped by 4% since 2020 and more than 52% since 2010.
