A middle-schooler from El Dorado Springs has claimed the first two major prizes at this year’s Missouri State Fair.

Judd Lawson of the Osage River 4-H Club picked up grand champion and reserve grand champion honors at Tuesday morning’s market poultry show, outranking the other 31 entries. Lawson tells KMMO News that he’s worked with poultry since he was five, and selected his eight birds from over 100 he raised this summer. He also shows black angus cattle and says he hopes to bring a pair of heifers to the state fair in the future.

Lawson’s grand champion pen weighed an average of 7.714 pounds, while the reserve pen weighed an average of 7.29 pounds. Both pens are the first two entries in the Youth of Agriculture Sale of Champions, set for August 17th at 1:30 p.m. in the Lowell Mohler Assembly Hall. The livestream of the sale will be available on KMMO.com.
