Oli Marmol says 'there's not one blanket statement you can tell' to fix Cardinals offense amid struggles in series against Reds

ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - The St. Louis Cardinals offense has been throughout the entire 2024 season inconsistent to say the least.

Overall, the Cardinals lineup has not been spectacular, posting a weighted runs created plus (wRC+) of 96, which is four points below the league average of 100 and a weighted on-base average (wOBA) of .304. Both numbers are in the bottom third of the league.

While the offense has shown some flashes and some moments of brilliance, it has also shown more than it's fair shares of struggles, with the Cardinals latest series against NL Central-rival Cincinnati Reds being the latest example of the latter.

The Cardinals lineup has not quite shown up at Great American Ballpark, with the lineup only scoring a total of two runs and nine hits through the two games against the Reds so far, with both games having been losses.

Cardinals manager Oli Marmol joined KMOX's Total Information A.M. to discuss the Cardinals struggles on offense and says that he recently had a conversation with some of his coaches about the struggles, especially during the series against the Reds.

"(The Reds) have outslugged us, we haven't hit the ball as nearly as well as they have this series," said Marmol. "We faced a tough arm in Hunter Greene (on Tuesday), but I felt like we could've got Andrew Abbott (on Monday). We got him before and we couldn't come up with the big hit."

Marmol knows that the Cardinals overall hitting struggles has been a problem all season, and he says that there are times that the Cardinals offense has shown flashes of brilliance and create plenty of opportunities, but they have not been able to capitalize on them.

"We create opportunities, but have yet been on a run where we get those big hits and pile on runs," said Marmol. "Did it a little bit against Texas while we were at home but it hasn't been a strength of ours to be quite honest."

Marmol says the answers to fixing the Cardinals offense is as clear as people would think and he says "there's not one blanket statement you can tell" the Cardinals offense to magically fix it overnight.

"It's not 'hey guys we need to do better with situational hitting' obviously they know that. They are big leaguers," said Marmol. "When you look at each guy individually, there's a reason for what they are doing and we're addressing it and trying to get them back on track.

"It's not just one 'hey we need to do this better as a club'. Yes, we need to drive in runs no doubts about it, but how we do that is not just one blanket statement for everybody."
