Decked out dorms are taking over social media

ST. LOUIS (KMOX) -What did you bring with you when you first went off to college? Sheets, clothes, a poster for your wall?

Times have changed and the stakes are high for Instagram-ready designer dorm rooms that cost hundreds, even thousands, of dollars.

The designer dorm room trend has spawned a whole industry with registries, even special dorm room designers!

Aisha Sultan with the St. Louis Post-Dispatch has chronicled this in a recent column , after a photo of the daughter of Kansas City Chiefs owner Clark Hunt went viral for her dorm room in SMU.

"Some of these dorms look like they are out of a Barbie Dreamhouse or they're just so carefully designed and curated in a very strange way that doesn't look like a dorm that what and I might've experienced in college," said Sultan on Total Information A.M.

In her article, Sultan mentioned finding a Facebook group for moms when it comes to decorating dorm rooms and found that some parents would spend a lot of time and money to have these dorm rooms decorated.

"People would bring U-Hauls full of things and spend months in advance buying all the stuff that they need, putting it all together, getting floorplans and measurements, then spend an entire day installing it all," said Sultan. "It was really shocking to me."

Sultan says the origins of this trend can be traced to the South, but it has really spread to a lot of parts of the country.

Sultan says she personally can't really comprehend of spending thousands of dollars to decorate the dorm of their kids

"It was really jarring and shocking to me to imagine investing this amount of time, money and effort for a room that you're going to be staying in for nine months," said Sultan.
