According to the Food and Drug Administration ( FDA ), a Class I recall is made in a situation “in which there is a reasonable probability that the use of, or exposure to, a violative product will cause serious adverse health consequences or death.”

The recalled products include pretzels, cookies, and “snack mixes,” which are sold by distributors in Alabama, California , Florida, Illinois, Iowa , Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, South Dakota, Texas , Virginia, Wisconsin, and Wyoming, in addition to leading departmental stores across the United States .

“Palmer Candy Company, Sioux City, Iowa, is recalling its ‘White Coated Confectionary Items’ because they have the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella,” read the company announcement on the FDA website.

“[Salmonella is] an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children , frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems,” the FDA website mentioned.

Explaining the circumstances that led to the recall, the FDA wrote:

“Palmer Candy was notified by its liquid coating supplier that there was a potential for contamination with salmonella from an ingredient that was potentially contaminated from one of their suppliers.”

“Production of the product has been suspended while FDA and the company continue their investigation as to the source of the problem.”

The recall was initially announced in May, and classified as a “Class I” recall on August 6, according to reports.

The list of recalled items shared by the Palmer Candy Company includes nearly 30 products.

The company also shared detailed pictures of the products, so that people who have bought them have no trouble recognizing and returning them.

“Consumers who have purchased White coated confectionary items manufactured by Palmer Candy Company are urged to return them to the place of purchase for a full refund,” the FDA mentioned .

Salmonella infection, or salmonellosis, is described as a “common bacterial disease that affects the intestinal tract,” which is generally contracted by humans via contaminated water or food.

“Some people with salmonella infection have no symptoms. Most people develop diarrhea, fever, and stomach (abdominal) cramps within 8 to 72 hours after exposure,” it has been reported by the Mayo Clinic .

“Most healthy people recover within a few days to a week without specific treatment.”

“In some cases, diarrhea can cause severe dehydration and requires prompt medical attention. Life-threatening complications also may develop if the infection spreads beyond the intestines,” the publication added.

It is worth noting that individuals traveling to countries without clean drinking water and proper sewage disposal are considered more at risk of salmonella infection.
