Diehard followers of a Filipino preacher accused of human trafficking and sexual abuse , among other allegations, were engaged in a daring standoff to shield their leader from thousands of cops.
Knewz.com has learned that the cult leader cowered in his underground lair located around 100 ft underground beneath his church compound as 2,000 cops attempted to nab him.
According to reports, the 30-hectare church compound includes a cathedral, a college , a bunker, and a taxiway leading to Davao International Airport.
Pictures of the standoff at the Kingdom of Jesus Christ church compound in Davao City, Philippines , showed law enforcement officers in riot gear attempting to storm the church while the ardent followers of fugitive evangelist Apollo Carreon Quiboloy formed a human shield in front of the church entrance.
Quiboloy, the self-proclaimed “appointed son of God” and “owner of the universe” and the founder of the Kingdom of Jesus Christ church, is wanted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation ( FBI ) and has been on the lam for three years.
The accusations against the preacher include his alleged participation “in a labor trafficking scheme that brought church members to the United States , via fraudulently obtained visas, and forced the members to solicit donations for a bogus charity, donations that actually were used to finance church operations and the lavish lifestyles of its leaders.”
“Members who proved successful at soliciting for the church allegedly were forced to enter into sham marriages or obtain fraudulent student visas to continue soliciting in the United States year-round,” reads a statement released by the FBI.
“Furthermore, it is alleged that females were recruited to work as personal assistants, or ‘pastorals,’ for Quiboloy and that victims prepared his meals, cleaned his residences, gave him massages and were required to have sex with Quiboloy in what the pastorals called ‘night duty,'” the allegations further read .
It was reported that several whistleblowers claimed they were held in the underground lair beneath the church compound against their will after being forced into a sexual relationship with the cult leader.
Several women have reportedly come forward claiming they were at a “young age” when they were first taken underground.
The list of charges the cult leader faces includes “Conspiracy to Engage in Sex Trafficking by Force, Fraud and Coercion, and Sex Trafficking of Children; Sex Trafficking by Force, Fraud, and Coercion; Conspiracy; Bulk Cash Smuggling,” according to the FBI.
Quiboloy is also said to have ties to Calabasas, California, Las Vegas, Nevada, and Kapolei, Hawaii.
The preacher was indicted on the aforementioned charges by a federal grand jury in the United States District Court for the Central District of California back in November 2021.
According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office of the Central District of California, the superseding indictment identified a total of nine defendants, three of whom were arrested the same year.
The Davao City Police Department has been trying to arrest the cult leader and five of his alleged accomplices in the recent raid that began on August 24.
It has been reported that members of the church have put up a fierce opposition against law enforcement, and have allegedly pelted stones at the Philippines National Police (PNP) and barricaded the highway with burning tires.
The police have stated that at least six officers had been injured in the standoff and over 18 people were arrested from the scene. By August 24, law enforcement officers had taken to firing tear gas shells in order to disperse the crowd.
Church members complained that the police had “brought a blue box about the size of a chest freezer into the compound, [which] had not gone through the X-ray scanner before entering,” according to a report by the Filipino daily The Manila Times .
“At the same time, the PNP brought in a long-range acoustic device or LRAD, equipment that produces sound at high power for communicating at a distance. It is also commonly used for perimeter security and crowd control,” the report further mentioned .
It has also been reported that a 51-year-old ardent supporter of the church and the cult leader has lost his life due to a heart attack amidst the violent standoff. The police have clarified in a statement that the death was unrelated to anything the PNP had done during the “operation.”
