Here's Why New Mexico Residents Are Tormented by the Strange Humming Noise

New Mexico’s Peculiar Humming Noise Explained!

From strange humming noises to eerie sounds, these phenomena often left people wondering about their origins. Some seemed like low rumbles, while others were high-pitched whines. One such peculiar sound puzzled the residents of New Mexico. This creepy sound appeared at night, and once it came, it rarely went away. Known as the 'Hum,' it was a steady, droning noise heard in places like Taos, New Mexico; Bristol, England; and Largs, Scotland. Locals and experts were concerned about the possible sources of this puzzling hum and how it affected those who heard it. We delved deeper into the mystery to learn if it had been solved.

The Haunting Echo of the Taos Hum

In 1993, residents of Taos, New Mexico, suddenly started hearing an odd screeching noise called the 'Taos Hum.' Katie Jacques of Leeds, England, told the BBC , "It was a kind of torture; sometimes, you just wanted to scream. It was worse at night, and it was hard to get off to sleep because I heard this throbbing sound in the background. You tossed and turned, and you got more and more agitated about it." James Cowan, the lead investigator of the Kokomo Hum study, even studied the Taos Hum, but even after a week-long study, no clear answers were found to this mystery. Experts struggled for over 30 years to find the source of this eerie sound.

    What Does It Sound Like?

In a 2003 study by sound expert Geoff Leventhall from Surrey, England, only 2 percent of people living in nearby areas could hear the humming sound, as reported by NBC News . Additionally, the sound was mainly heard by individuals aged between 55 and 70 years. Knewz.com noted the frequency that typically fell between 32 Hz and 80 Hz, and some had even moved cities due to this disturbing noise. Some residents described it as a low rumble from a diesel engine in the distance, while others thought it resembled a jet stream, a fan, a swarm of bees, or a cicada's buzz. Conversely, some found it extremely calming and meditative.

    The Related Symptoms

With the research ongoing, doctors ruled out the fear of tinnitus. However, people affected by the Taos Hum experienced other serious symptoms, including bad headaches, nausea, nosebleeds, and diarrhea. The situation worsened when a suicide case in England was linked to this unbearable hum. Dr. Baguley told the BBC , "It became a vicious cycle. The more people focused on the noise, the more anxious and fearful they got; the more the body responded by amplifying the sound, which caused even more upset and distress." The sound usually started around 10 PM, just when they were ready to sleep. It was hard to explain, but it felt like a heavy truck was running outside their window, and when they sneaked out to check, they found nothing.

    Researchers Unraveling Possible Explanations

Experts had been baffled and were trying to find logical explanations. However, in the process, many wild theories emerged, with some believing that it was a real phenomenon and not just mass hysteria or an alien-related case. Other possible explanations included high-pressure gas lines, electrical power lines, and wireless devices. Some attributed the sound to low-frequency electromagnetic waves that only a few could hear. Furthermore, Leventhall suggested cognitive-behavioral therapy for those affected. He told the BBC, as reported by NBC News , "It had been a mystery for 40 years, so it might well remain one for a lot longer." People affected by the humming noise used white noise machines and other devices to help block the sound.
