Kawasaki USA is recalling nearly 20,000 Mule PRO 1000 Off-Highway Utility Vehicles because starting the engine can spark a fire, according to a notice posted by the U.S. Product Safety Commission.

The recall involves approximately 19,100 model-year 2024 Mule PRO-FX 1000, PRO-FXR 1000 and PRO-FXT 1000 utility vehicles, in multiple editions and colors. Model numbers and Vehicle Identification Numbers (VIN) included on the recall can be found on the CPSC website .

When starting the engine on the recalled models, “improper combustion can occur,” posing a fire hazard, the CPSC said.

Kawasaki said it has received three reports of fires during engine startup. No injuries were reported.

The recalled UTVs were sold at Kawasaki dealers nationwide from June 2023 through April 2024 for between $15,100 and $21,900.

Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled vehicles and contact a Kawasaki dealer to schedule a free repair, which involves reprogramming the engine control unit (ECU) and installing a sub-harness on the vehicle.

Kawasaki said it is contacting all known purchasers directly.
