Interstates 40 and 26 in Tennessee will require extensive, long-term repairs before anyone can drive on them again – and they're not the only ones.

In addition to the two interstates, numerous other state roads in East Tennessee are closed and in need of significant repairs after flooding caused by Hurricane Helene. Tennessee Department of Transportation crews already are working on roads around the region.

"No other interstate work is needed at this time other than I-40 in Cocke County and I-26 in Unicoi County," TDOT district spokesperson Mark Nagi said.

While I-26 promises to be a " lengthy closure ," I-40 is expected to reopen soon – though only the stretch inside Tennessee, not going into North Carolina.

"For I-40 in Cocke County, we are hopeful to have one lane open in each direction to the state line in two weeks, hopefully in the next two days," Nagi told Knox News on Oct. 7.

Here are the state roads and highways in each county in need of repair:

    • Carter County: State Routes 67/91(Broad Street), 143, and 159 (U.S. 321)
    • Cocke County: I-40
    • Johnson County: State Routes 34, 91 (closed from SR-34), 159 (entire route), and 167 (U.S.-421 to SR-67)
    • Greene County: State Routes 107, 350 and 351
    • Unicoi County: I-26, and State Routes 36 and 81.
    • Washington County: State Routes 81 (closed at the intersection of SR-81 and SR-107) and 353.

TDOT has not provided any estimated times for when repairs on these roadways will be done.

The recommended alternate route between Tennessee and North Carolina is I-81 and I-77, according to Nagi.
