Son of one of biggest names in baseball history reportedly won't suit up for the Tennessee Vols

Well, it sounds like we won't be seeing Manny Ramirez around Knoxville after all.  At least not around the Tennessee Vols baseball facilities, that is.

Lucas Ramirez, son of the great Boston Red Sox outfielder Manny, has reportedly decided to move on to professional baseball instead of coming to Knoxville, according to GoVols 247's Ben McKee .

Ramirez committed to the Vols back in January 2023 out of American Heritage High School in Plantation, Florida, which he confirmed at the time on Twitter/X.  However, those plans changed when he was drafted by the Los Angeles Angels in the 17th round of this week's draft.

While it's unfortunate to lose any player, Tennessee is not going to be hurting for talent next season by any means.  Hunter Ensley announced he's returning, and the Vols have oodles of talent coming in next year, including noteworthy names in the portal in Louisville INF Gavin Liken, Niagara 1B/OF Eric Rataczak (who was also drafted and could opt for the pros), Kennesaw State pitcher Tanner Franklin, and INF Andrew Fischer and pitcher Liam Doyle from Ole Miss.

Still, it would have been pretty cool to see the son of one of the all-time greats lace them up in Knoxville.  Manny earned 12 All-Star nods while hitting .312 and bashing 555 home runs over a brilliant 19-year career with the Indians, Red Sox, Dodgers, White Sox, and Rays. He made his name for himself with clutch blast after clutch blast in the postseason, holding the all-time record with 29 postseason home runs through the 2023 season.

Unfortunately, there will be no competing crowd shots of Manny and Jeff Kent in Omaha next year.  Instead, Lucas will get the chance to try to play with another couple of Vols out in sunny Anaheim in Christian Moore and Ben Joyce .
