"Songs of Summer Insects,” a look at local insects and just how they make all that racket, will be presented in a free virtual program at 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 1, by naturalist Stephen Lyn Bales.

The male crickets, cicadas, grasshoppers and katydids are making themselves known with loud mating calls. Nighttimes can get loud. They can't be called vocalizations because insects use other parts of their bodies to make the sounds.

Bales will join University of Tennessee Arboretum education coordinator Michelle Campanis via Zoom for the August Nature Supper Club presentation. The program is free, but you must register to be sent a link to watch the live presentation and the recording at your convenience. Register at utarboretumsociety.org under Programs. Contact Michelle at mcampani@utk.edu for any questions or registration issues.
