Jalin Hyatt's comments about Giants adding Malik Nabers to the roster should be required listening for any young athlete

Former Tennessee Vols wide receiver Jalin Hyatt put on a clinic on Friday on how to be an elite teammate.

Hyatt, a third round selection by the New York Giants in the 2023 NFL Draft, was asked by USA Today's Art Stapleton about the Giants' decision to select LSU Tigers wide receiver Malik Nabers with the No. 6 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft.

Specifically, Stapleton asked Hyatt about viewing Nabers as a threat.

"This is not a selfish game," said Hyatt. "It's a team sport game. Really just adding Malik, it helps me. It helps Wan'Dale (Robinson), it helps Slay (Darius Slayton). He's (Nabers) a great athlete, a great player. I'm actually glad that we added him. We can do a lot more things on offense. We can be more versatile. We can put guys in other spots. Not only that but we can change what the defense sees with their eyes with Malik. I'm proud that he's on our team."

"We all want the ball, we all want 1,000 yards, it comes," added Hyatt when told that he lost his "NFL WR card" due to his "not a selfish game" comment.

What an incredible answer by Hyatt. One of the biggest reasons I'm confident that Hyatt will be successful in the NFL isn't because of his elite speed or his vastly underrated route-running abilities, but because of his competitive spirit. Hyatt's got that dog in him. The No. 1 item on his list is winning. And he's willing to play whatever role he needs to in order to help his team win.

Hyatt's also incredibly focused and determined. He's worked hard all offseason to improve. And I wouldn't be surprised if we see him make a similar jump from his rookie year to his second year as he did at Tennessee from his sophomore year to his junior year.

“His growth, so far, a year removed from when he first got here is tremendous,” said Giants WR coach Mike Groh in May when asked about Hyatt. “All of the work that he put in, investing in his game — learning what, how, and why. He’s just a different guy. He’s got stronger here in the offseason. Still has the speed that we all love about him. Confidence is a result of demonstrated performance and he was able to go out there and make plays for us and show up in games and help us win games. Has a lot of experience — a lot of in-game experience and that can only serve him well this year.”

Ultimately, the only way a team stands a chance to win a championship or at least make a deep playoff run is if everyone on the roster is on the same page. Everyone has to believe in the head coach's vision. That doesn't mean they have to think the coach is infallible, but if everyone doesn't buy in to the vision, then the team doesn't stand a chance at finding success.

It's clear that Hyatt's bought in. And that's what's going to make him a very dangerous player on Sundays this fall.
