Tennessee star Jourdan Thomas is lost for the year following a season ending knee injury . Thomas suffered the injury on Saturday.

With the injury to Thomas, what direction does Tennessee turn as they look for their best five in the defensive backfield. The first option would appear to be freshman Boo Carter. Carter has been working behind Thomas and has made plays from the day he arrived on campus.

“(He’s) a special player, really athletic,” center Cooper Mays said Tuesday in Dallas during Tennessee’s run through SEC Media Days . “… Super athletic kid. Cool kid too. Really easy to get along with, fits right in. I’m not sure how we’ll use him, but you’ve got to find ways to use somebody like that.”

That way is now at the star position. Defensive coordinator Tim Banks said it’s a matter of the Chattanooga native growing quickly.

“Boo is great energy all the time,” Banks said. “He is a guy that is always 100 miles per hour. I think as he continues to grow in our program, he will continue to get a little bit more mature. We definitely like what he brings from a football perspective. He is a kid that works hard and wants to do well. He has shown some maturity, but I think you will see more once he gets his feet wet a little bit.”

His feet is getting wet much quicker now with the loss of Thomas.

Tennessee returns to the practice field on Monday, which will be their first day in full pads.
