Sedgwick County Commissioners have approved new zoning requirements for commercial and industrial solar projects in the unincorporated areas of the county.

Some of the revisions include limiting the size of solar farms to no more than 1,500 acres, and no more than six contiguous sections of land. Also, no unattached portion of a solar farm may be located more than 1 mile away from the rest of the facility.

Commissioner David Dennis said the work done today will help guide the county well into the future, and will help protect the county, the land owner, the developer and the environment.

A moratorium on solar projects in the county expires on September 13. Commercial wind farms are still banned.
