The City of Wichita is moving forward on its plan to open a new winter shelter for the homeless. Mayor Lily Wu tells KNSS News the City has finalized a deal to buy the former Park Elementary School building on north Main from USD 259. The City has $600,000 to pay for someone to operate the shelter, which is set to open November 28. Organizations can apply to be the operator of the facility until October 4.

Wu commented during Mondays with the Mayor on the Steve and Ted in the Morning Show on KNSS.

I’d let the private industry worry about the homeless. There are programs like the Union Rescue Mission. This is their area of expertise. The City needs to stay out of this area and other areas in the private sector.
