Sedgwick County Sheriff Deputies responded to a shooting call outside of Cessna Elementary School, 3101 W 45th South. The calls began around 9:15 a.m. on Monday, Sept. 23, 2024.

When the deputy arrived, he located a man, 46, who was armed with a handgun and made statements that the Deputy would kill him while pointing the gun at the Deputy. The suspect then ran to and laid on top of a woman, 30.

The Deputy gave commands for the suspect to drop his gun, and the Deputy saw the suspect place the gun to the woman’s head. In defense of the woman, the Deputy fired his handgun twice. The suspect would not let go of the woman. The Deputy ran up and attempted to disarm the man physically.

It took two Wichita Police Officers and the Deputy to disarm the man. The investigation has revealed that the man and woman live together and have children together. There was an argument in a vehicle on Clarence that led to the man shooting the woman multiple times.

The woman fled toward the school, followed by the man who was armed with the handgun.

A Wichita Public School staff member saw the man approaching the front door and pulled the door shut, locking it so the man could not get inside.

The woman and the suspect were transported to an area hospital, and, at this time, it is believed that both will survive their injuries.

When the suspect is released from the hospital, he will be booked into jail on a charge of Attempted Murder and Aggravated Assault of a Law Enforcement Officer.

USD259 staff handled this situation exactly as they should have to limit any risk to students and staff. Additionally, Emergency Communications, Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office, Wichita Police Department, Sedgwick County Emergency Medical Services and Wichita Fire Department personnel responded to this scene and worked collaboratively to manage a chaotic situation while limiting the risk to the public.

The Advanced Law Enforcement Response Team (ALERT) was activated to conduct this investigation. ALERT team investigators will present the facts of this case to the Sedgwick County District Attorney’s Office for formal charging consideration.
