FORT SMITH, Ark. (KNWA/KFTA) — The Sebastian County Sheriff’s Office says it is looking for a man considered “armed and dangerous”.

In the early morning hours of October 6, an SCSO deputy conducted a traffic stop near the intersection of Wheeler Avenue and Zero Street in Fort Smith. The driver of the vehicle continued west, stopping near the Oklahoma state line, according to a news release.

Once the driver stopped, he got out of the vehicle. The deputy told him to stop and get back into his vehicle, the release said. Instead of returning to the vehicle, he ran.

The deputy chased after him and ran into a heavily vegetated area near train tracks. The release said the deputy saw two muzzle flashes and heard two gunshots coming from the brush.

There was reportedly a passenger in the vehicle who stayed. The driver was later identified as Jeremiah McCool, 32, of Wister, Oklahoma.

Multiple units later arrived on the scene along with a drone unit.

An arrest warrant was issued for McCool for aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer.

McCool was described as being 5’5″ and weighing 140 pounds. He has black short hair and brown eyes and was last seen wearing a multi-colored shirt, blue jeans, and tan work boots.

Anyone with information is asked to call SCSO at 479-783-1051.
