FAYETTEVILLE, ARK (KNWA/KFTA) — A stroll throughout the University of Arkansas can be serene, but a late-night walk through campus can leave students feel uneasy.

Lexi Stuewe, a senior in the nursing program at the University of Arkansas, said that she often studies late into the night at the library. She prefers to have friends accompany her for walks back to her dorm once it gets dark, as she feels unsafe walking alone.

“Walking to my car is something that is not super enjoyable. I feel like as I’ve grown older, it’s something that’s definitely in the back of my head all the time just to be aware of,” said Stuewe.

The number of victims on campus is difficult to quantify, Mary A. Wyandt-Hiebert, the director of the Sexual Violence and Relationship Center at the University of Arkansas, said.

“When you look at the statistics, sexual violence is overwhelming among college students,” said Wyandt-Hiebert. “It is the most under-reported crime that’s out there and what research and studies have shown is consistently only about 5% of those who are victimized by sexual violence all while they’re in college.”

UAPD goes to campus every year with faculty and students to fix the lighting. These risk reduction strategies can only help reduce the risk.

“Risk education strategies are great for what they are, and they do help reduce the risk,” Wyandt-Hiebert said. “But things can still happen, and when they do happen, it’s important to realize that it’s not your fault, it’s the offender’s fault.”

Stuewe makes effort to reduce her risk of becoming a victim late at night, she said.

“Sometimes I’ll have a study friend and will be on the phone until we get to the car,” said Stuewe.

The Sexual Violence Resource Center (SVRC) encourages everyone to stay aware of their surroundings and prioritize safety, according to Wyandt-Hiebert.
