FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (KNWA/KFTA) — As the students start back to school, the Don and Millie Nelms Foundation announced the opening of the Nelms Dyslexia Center in Fayetteville.

According to the press release, the Center provides dyslexia assessments, reading therapy, teacher training, and information for families. The Nelms Dyslexia Center is a project of the Don and Millie Nelms Foundation and is a way for Don and Millie to give back to the community they love. Don has dyslexia and wants to help kids and adults that have similar challenges as he had growing up.

Approximately 1 in 5 students has dyslexia. We are thrilled to work with our educational community to bring such a high level of support to students, families, and teachers.

Pam Henley, Director of the Nelms Dyslexia Center

The release says that the Center will help people with dyslexia unlock their full potential in their learning and life through becoming proficient in reading and spelling as well as discovering their strengths. The Center’s instructional programs and information are all rooted in the science of reading and current research in dyslexia. Resources provided by the Center include:

    • Dyslexia assessments and reading therapy for students and adults,
    • Training for teachers to become Certified Academic Language Therapists (CALT) and Qualified Instructors (QI),
    • Professional development training in dyslexia and the science of reading,
    • Opportunities for teachers and administrators to share their successful dyslexia instructional stories and learn from each other,
    • Information and support for families, businesses, and our community, and
    • Research on dyslexia curriculum and methodologies.

According to the press release, all the staff are trained Certified Academic Language Therapists with years of experience and demonstrated results in helping students learn how to read.

““Thank you to all the dyslexia leaders who have guided the Foundation in the development of the Center. We are excited about this very talented Center team and the future for Arkansas’ students with dyslexia, their families and their teachers.”
