Alma High School celebrates 60th anniversary of integration

ALMA, Ark. (KNWA/KFTA) — On Aug. 28, the Alma School District will celebrate the 60th anniversary of its high school’s integration.

In 1964, the Alma School Board voted to integrate the high school. Sixteen students from that first group will now be honored with a plaque and a special commemoration event at the school.

The celebration begins at 5:30 p.m. at the school. The event is a meaningful opportunity to show the students who integrated the school how their legacy has impacted Alma High, Alma Superintendent Bryan Duffie said.

“To see all of them come back and if they haven’t been on campus in a while, to see the changes that have happened and the expansion and the growth and the programs offered and positive change that was brought about by their courage and their commitment to make a better future for Alma schools.

The celebration coincides with the Alma-Van Buren football game, so the festivities will conclude with a pre-game recognition of the historic group.
