FORT SMITH, Ark. (KNWA/KFTA) — The community came together on Friday to honor the service and sacrifice of a local hero.

Senator John Boozman presented a Purple Heart to Staff Sergeant Gregory Smith.

Smith was injured during a bombing at Al Assad Air Base in Iraq in January 2020. Boozman’s office worked with Smith and his family to obtain the documents and evidence necessary to formally request a purple heart evaluation.

After a lengthy process, the medal was authorized.

“One of the most special awards we can give, but sadly his case was such that it fell through the cracks and we were able to work and help get that fixed,” Boozman said.

In addition to serving our country, Smith also serves our community as a trooper with Arkansas State Police.
