Former volunteer returns to Walmart NW Arkansas Championship as pro golfer

ROGERS, Ark. (KNWA/KFTA) — A former volunteer at the Walmart NW Arkansas Championship Presented by P&G is now returning to the fairways at Pinnacle Country Club as a professional golfer.

Lilly Russell spent much of her childhood living in Bentonville after moving from Central Arkansas during her sophomore year of high school.

Russell says her dad and grandpa are the ones who instilled a love for golf within her.

“My dad brought me out here before I even started playing golf,” said Russell.

She says her dad was the one who drove her up to Northwest Arkansas to volunteer at the tournament a few times when she was young, allowing her to watch and learn from the professionals.

“We drove up from Central Arkansas and I got to watch them hit the ball. So, when you’re little, it’s just like ‘woah,’ and I’m still impressed with them today,” said Russell.

Eventually, the Arkansas native began to play the course herself with her high school team.

This year, Russell will appear in the tournament as a professional for the first time after playing twice previously as an amateur.

She says being back at the course is like taking a walk down memory lane, reminding her especially of the times she spent with her dad learning how to golf.

“I had to putt to a Dr. Pepper [can], and it’s like, [If] I hit it, I got to drink it. Dr. Pepper can and Nutter Butters, that was my snack to get me to go to the golf course,” Russell said.

She says even though her dad made attempts to teach all three of her sisters about golf, it only stuck with her.

“He’s definitely impressed with how far I’ve taken it. I can outdrive him now, but he wouldn’t like me saying that,” said Russell. “He’s definitely a role model and just for my dedication level. Golf is a special connection we have and get to keep using because you can play your whole life.”

Russell is set to take the stage Friday at the Walmart NW Arkansas Championship Presented by P&G. With much of her family still residing in Bentonville, she says she expects them to show up and show out.

“They’ve gotten to see me on this stage before, but I think playing as a pro is just a little more special, just because you’re on the same level and you get to compare your games to them. So, they’ll be out here,” said Russell.

Russell says she’s hopeful for a top 25 finish this week in her home state.
