LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – A national program to take unwanted or unneeded drugs out of circulation will take place in Arkansas on Oct. 26.

The Arkansas Opioid Recovery Partnership (ARORP) is organizing the Saturday event. Collection sites can be found online or using ARORP’s ReviveAR app . The website and app also provide educational resources, including safe disposal practices.

CDC statistics show overdose deaths decreasing in Arkansas

ARORP officials said it has coordinated with over 200 law enforcement agencies working together to collect unused medication at more than 300 permanent drop boxes throughout the state.

ARORP director Kirk Lane said participation in drug take back is a community responsibility.

“Prescription opioids are a major driver of the opioid crisis, and it’s our responsibility as a community to dispose of drugs when they’re no longer needed,” Lane said. “By participating in Arkansas Drug Take Back Day, we can all ensure safer communities while simultaneously supporting statewide efforts to combat drug misuse and promote public health.”

Officials said Arkansas has historically been in the top 10 states for the weight of drugs collected during the event. Arkansans disposed of 25,405 pounds of medication during the spring 2024 take back event, they said, contributing to the safe destruction of 303,077 tons of medication since 2010.
