A burglary suspect suffering from an apparent drug overdose died while in custody, Los Angeles police announced Wednesday.

Rampart Division officers were sent to the 200 block of South Rampart Boulevard in the Westlake area around 3:40 p.m. Saturday in response to a residential burglary, according to the Los Angeles Police Department. The officers were directed to a parking lot, where a person was restraining the suspect on the ground, police said.

The suspect was immediately handcuffed and became unresponsive, appearing to be in medical distress, according to police.

"Based on their observation, the officers believed the subject was experiencing a drug overdose and requested a rescue ambulance," police said in a statement.

Officers gave the suspect Narcan and administered CPR until the arrival of Los Angeles Fire Department personnel, who continued life-saving measures until pronouncing the suspect dead at the scene, police said.

The Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner was withholding the identity of the individual pending notification of relatives.

The in-custody death was being investigated by the LAPD Force Investigation Division.
