The call of a vehicle in the San Gabriel River came in at about 10:20 Tuesday morning, prompting the Long Beach Police Dive unit to send a team to the scene bordering Seal Beach.

KNX News' Pete Demetriou reports, they found a red Jeep convertible sitting upright at the river bottom with water covering the roof.

The driver was rescued and taken to a local hospital and is said to be in stable condition.

Police believe the man was offroading in a nearby wetlands area and trying to get to a service road atop the river bank.

The initial assessment suggests he may have driven through a fence, up the embankment, and then went airborne into the river.

Officials say they will know more once Long Beach police question the drive.
