Man accused of shooting at San Bernardino deputy faces new federal charges

A Victorville man who was tried and acquitted last year for allegedly trying to kill a San Bernardino County Sheriff’s deputy is now facing federal charges over the same incident.

In 2019, Ari Young was being searched by a deputy who responded to a domestic disturbance call at his mother’s house. Young allegedly assaulted the deputy, stole her gun, and fired it in her direction.

During his 2023 trial, Young was acquitted of attempted murder and assault with a firearm on a police officer, but convicted of firing a gun with gross negligence. He was sentenced to time served for the year and a half he spent awaiting trial. But after the sheriff’s department asked the U.S. Attorney’s Office to examine the case, new federal charges were filed against Young.

“Justice was not done in the state prosecution. We believe it's important for federal authorities to step in when justice was not done,” said U.S. Attorney Martin Estrada.

Young was arrested Tuesday by ATF agents on felony charges of interference with commerce by robbery, using and discharging a firearm in relation to a crime of violence, and possession of a stolen firearm and stolen ammunition. If convicted, he faces more than 20 years in prison.
