A woman behind the wheel of a reportedly stolen SUV -- who drove erratically and at high speeds on surface streets, narrowly avoiding vehicles and pedestrians from Lawndale to Hawthorne to Inglewood -- was finally taken into custody inside a South Los Angeles apartment building Friday after leaving the vehicle and fleeing on foot.

The chase began around 4:30 p.m. Friday, and authorities pursued the vehicle as the motorist traveled on the wrong side of the road, jumped a curb in a parking lot and weaved in and out of traffic, cutting off other drivers as she eluded law enforcement.

The woman exited the vehicle in South Los Angeles near Compton Avenue and East 92nd Street and began running, then walking. She occasionally tried to hitch rides with passing drivers, but no one stopped.

She eventually entered an apartment building near Evers Avenue and East 96th Street. Authorities entered the building, and she was taken into custody on the second floor with an unknown injury, according to broadcast reports.

Details of what led to the vehicle being stolen were not immediately known.
