Investigators are trying to figure out who’s behind a cyberattack that took down Cucamonga Valley Water District's computers earlier this month.

The ransomware attack on Aug. 15 disrupted the district’s computer network and made it impossible for customers to pay their bills by phone, according to an alert from CVWD . Water services weren’t impacted.

“Our team is working diligently to determine the scope of the event,” according to CVWD. “It is important to note that CVWD’s customer database is hosted on a separate third-party network that is not involved. Should our investigation determine that any personal information related to individuals was impacted by this incident, we will provide notice to those individuals as necessary."

The Daily Bulletin reports that the problem was resolved on Monday. The water district notified federal authorities about the attack, but didn’t identify the hackers or say whether they’d paid a ransom.

Back in March, the federal government warned that foreign hackers were striking drinking water systems in the U.S.
