Will California smokers soon be able to order a sandwich with their joint?

A key decision by Governor Gavin Newsom will determine whether Californians can soon order a joint and a sandwich from the same menu.

KNX News Larry Perell reports it all comes down to a bill approved by the state legislature Wednesday - AB 1775 .

Currently, so-called cannabis cafes can only sell prepackaged snacks and drinks when patrons order weed, but if Newsom signs this bill, the cafes could be allowed to sell food and nonalcoholic beverages with your pre-roll.

L.A.-based healthcare attorney Harry Nelson says Newsom vetoed a similar bill over concerns of secondhand smoke, but this time, perception could be what kills the bill.

"I do think the real concern with the governor is whether he is going to be labeled as a kind of overly permissive figure, and that will limit his prospects in the future," Nelson said.

According to Nelson, the concerns expressed over the last bill have been addressed in the new one.

"It does seem like the bill is designed to ensure that there are spaces so that people preparing food and people who don't want to be bothered by smoke can be free of it," he said.

Still, in Nelson's opinion, the change, if adopted, won't do much to move the needle for those in the industry.

If Newsom signs the bill into law, cities other than West Hollywood and Oakland would have to establish their own licensing systems to allow food to be sold alongside cannabis.
