September is National Preparedness Month, and with the recent earthquakes in Southern California, it’s time to get serious about being ready.

“California is earthquake country,” said Janiele Maffei with the California Earthquake Authority. “It has two-thirds of our nation's seismic risk.”

Maffei told KNX News’ Karen Aams that while earthquakes may not happen all the time, we need to keep them top of mind.

“Just having a plan with your family for what you're gonna do, where you're gonna meet, who you're gonna call,” she said. “And then there are other things that we can do, certainly some of them a little bit more expensive if we're gonna look at vulnerabilities in our houses, but extremely important for a family to understand their risks and to take steps to reduce those risks.”

Maffei says if your house was built before the 1980s or has a raised foundation, it's vulnerable and should be retrofitted.
