Coyotes are a well-known part of the Los Angeles ecosystem – but recently they’ve been spotted in areas you wouldn’t normally expect.

Park La Brea, a sprawling gated apartment community near The Grove in the Miracle Mile district, sent out a notice to its more than 10,000 residents that coyotes have been seen around the premises.

Melissa, who walks her dog Wilbur around the area several times a day, tells KNX News’ Emily Valdez that she knows several residents who have seen coyotes wandering through.

“Some have had experiences, especially in the garden apartments when they've been used to letting their pets out,” she said. “I believe there was at least one incident where a coyote got either a cat or a small dog.”

And it’s not just Park La Brea – coyotes have been seen all over the area in Fairfax, Melrose, and Central L.A. Experts say the coyotes are likely venturing away from the hills and moving deeper into the city to search for food, water, and shelter.

“It makes sense because we've encroached on their habitat for so long,” Melissa said.

If you live in the area, remember to use a leash when walking your dog and don’t leave pets in your yard unattended. If you see a coyote, make noise and wave your arms to scare it off.
