The extreme heat sweeping the area isn't the only thing making high school athletes sweat in Southern California.

New California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) rules, intended to keep student-athletes safe in the heat, have high school football teams adjusting their practice and game times.

KNX News' Karen Adams spoke with Chaminade College Preparatory - High School athletic director Todd Borowski about how they're managing.

"Everything we do is for the kids, and this benefits kids a lot," Borowski said amid the triple-digit heat . "The last two weeks has just been really bad, this week has been horrible. but, you know, you pivot and adjust and, and keep on going."

He says practice has required quite a bit of maneuvering, especially for the football team. "We have a baseball field with grass and a turf field, so sometimes they start on the baseball field because the temperature is lower, and then when the temperature on the turf field gets to a point where we can practice, we'll go up there." But a few times, after multiple heat-related delays, the team must go without practice.

As for games, Chaminade and other teams have had to adjust their kickoff times or reschedule them altogether because of the heat.

It’s funny that this is a topic. When I played high school football in the early 80’s, we had the same heat along with stage 2 smog alerts. We didn’t get water until we did certain parts of the practice with perfection. What has changed?
