Rancho Palos Verdes residents in the Portuguese Bend Landslide area learned this week that the next utility they’ll lose is internet access. KNX’s Nataly Tavidian reported on the ongoing issue.

According to an emergency alert on the city’s website, Cox Communication said that it plans to de-energize and disconnect around 200 customers in the area Monday.

Cox Communication provided the following statement to KNX News:

On Monday evening, we will indefinitely suspended service for some residential customers in Rancho Palos Verdes due to a State of Emergency declared by Governor Newsom amid ongoing land movement. We maintained connectivity as long as it was safe to do so, but evolving conditions require us to discontinue service. We remain committed to supporting customers through this difficult time, and we aim to restore service as soon as it’s safe for our crews to do so.

“Charging stations for cellphones, laptops, and other electronic devices are available at the Ladera Linda Community Center from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily,” said the alert from Rancho Palos Verdes. “In addition, the City is coordinating with cellular providers to bring temporary cell communication facilities to affected areas in the days to come. Residents in the area have already lost their gas service. Last weekend , Southern California Edison told residents along the Portuguese Bend landslide complex they will lose power indefinitely, though backup generators were provided. This was confirmed by City Manager Ara Mihranian.

“Because communication is important, especially in light of the current situation, we… have started to engage with, the major wireless carriers such as AT&T and Verizon to install temporary mobile trailers that provide communication lines to four wireless facilities,” said Mihranian of the internet service update in a Saturday interview with KNX.

As of Saturday, the area was still under an evacuation warning, particularly because a potential sewer failure could put public health and safety at risk.

“Residents who choose to remain in their homes are asked to limit their use of water and plumbing, especially overnight when generators may be turned off for periods at a time,” said the city website . “Examples of ways to limit use include taking short 3-minute showers, avoiding unnecessary flushes, turning off the tap while doing dishes, and running dishwashers and washing machines only with full loads.”
