‘They can't ignore us’— Workers demand L.A. County leaders return to bargaining table

Thousands of unionized Los Angeles County workers gathered outside the Board of Supervisors meeting on Tuesday, demanding the county return to the bargaining table.

Members of SEIU 721, the union representing many Southern California county and city workers, picketed outside the Hall of Administration.

SEIU 721 President David Green spoke with KNX News’ Karen Adams about the issues union members want addressed.

“A lot of it is around the understaffing needs. We're all public sector workers and so we're serving the public whether you're an emergency room nurse or a child social worker,” he said. “There's a major understaffing. There are a lot of vacancies. That's one thing. Also the outsourcing of jobs. If you have somewhere like the Department of Mental Health, 54% of the jobs are contracted out. “

Green said it’s time the county took union members and their contracts seriously.

“They need to stop union-busting. They need to stop breaking the law,” he said. “We filed 20 unfair labor practice charges. They can't ignore us.”

Union members said if the county doesn't return to the bargaining table, they'll strike on October 10th.
