Previous reporting of this article stated that someone jumped off the bridge and died. Although KTLA and KCAL previously cited LAPD that someone died, KNX News has learned that no one is dead. The article was updated to reflect the new information.

All lanes of the 710 Freeway at the Gateway Bridge were shut down Monday morning due to a police investigation

“It actually started around 3 a.m. this morning in Rampart division with a carjacking and kidnapping that occurred in the 1200 block of West Eighth Street,” Detective Megan Aguilar with the LAPD said. “That vehicle is a white Mercedes SUV.”

Aguilar said that the car was used in the pharmacy burglary, which took place around 4 a.m. on E. Anaheim Street in Wilmington

The owner of the pharmacy told KNX News he got an alarm notification.

“So I called my assistant, who was on the other line looking at the cameras, and [they] said,’ Yeah, there's roughly 9 to 10 guys inside the pharmacy and outside the pharmacy,’” he said. “I think seven or eight of seven or eight of them were standing outside in two or three entered the premises with saws and tools trying to break a safe that we have.”

The owner said he called the police and that when they arrived, he saw one of the suspects running into the trunk of a white car.

The suspects fled law enforcement and made their way to the bridge. Upon reaching Pier T, 11 suspects fled from the car.

LAPD confirmed that six people are in custody. KNX News' Pete Demetriou reported that a number of suspects had gotten into the sports structure under the bridge. SWAT searched the area but no further suspects were found.

Officers also found burglary tools in the car.

Just after 8 a.m. traffic was being diverted to PCH from SB I-710, according to CalTrans . The bridge has since reopened.
